Dear Biomedical Engineering Alumni and Friends:

Welcome to our latest e-newsletter!

We are in the midst of our 10th year as a department (following 35 years as an interdisciplinary center) and we continue to thrive and to grow. Just since 2016, three new faculty members have joined our department, bringing the total number of faculty to 28!

Please join me in welcoming our new members and recognizing the accomplishments all our students and faculty.


BME Welcomes Three New Faculty

The Department of Biomedical Engineering is rapidly growing and now has 28 faculty members. BME recently welcomed three new faculty members—Dr. Daniel Gallego-Perez, Dr. Matthew Reilly and Dr. Katelyn Swindle-Reilly—who help enhance our strategic plan for growth. Learn more.

Dr. He Awarded $5.1 M for Research

Dr. Xiaoming He, associate professor of biomedical engineering, and his colleagues were recently awarded three new research grants totaling over $5.1 million. Two are R01 5-year grants with the National Institutes of Health (NIH) and the third is a three-year grant from the National Science Foundation. Learn more.

2016 Capstone Demo Day

From an assistive device for kayak paddles to a holding chamber for ex vivo eye experiments, a range of student-created innovations were presented at 6th Annual Capstone Demo Day on April 28. Twenty teams shared their final projects, with several earning awards in recognition of their hard work throughout the year. Learn more.

BME Undergrad Recognized for
Humanitarian Service

Honors student and BME Eminence Fellow Abd Al-Rahman Traboulsi shared his personal experiences on the ground in Syria at TedxOhioStateUniversity’s fifth annual event on March 5, 2016. In recognition of his humanitarian service, Traboulsi was also named a Resolution Project Fellow and Social Venture Challenge Finalist at the Clinton Foundation’s 2016 Clinton Global Initiative University conference. Learn more.

Dr. Leight Selected for
NAE’s U.S. Frontiers of Engineering Symposium

Called one of 83 of the nation’s “brightest young engineers”, Biomedical Engineering Assistant Professor Jennifer Leight has been selected to participate in the National Academy of Engineering’s 2016 US Frontiers of Engineering Symposium. Learn more.

Dr. Hart Returns from Sabbatical

After spending six months teaching, revising textbooks and conducting research in Europe, BME Chair Richard Hart returned from a productive sabbatical in June. Learn more.

2016 Annual Awards Picnic

The department honored 19 outstanding BME faculty, students and staff at the annual end-of-the-year-awards picnic in April. The event is co-hosted with Biomedical Engineering Society (BMES) Ohio State University Student Chapter. Learn more.
